The National Disability Insurance Scheme will provide funds to help those with permanent or significant disabilities. This can include home modifications which can aid independence and living standards, greatly reducing the impact of their disability. With around 4.3 million Australians currently living with a disability and that figure set to rise, the NDIS will spend more than $22 Billion a year to help. Find out about your eligibility here.
If you or someone in your family is suddenly injured or falls ill, you may be able to adapt your home and bathroom accordingly which will be necessary to ensure greater independence and therefore reducing the impact of their disability. Here is an example of some bathroom modifications that can be funded by the NDIS and fitted by your local bathroom renovation specialist.
The above list is just an example of what can be done, each persons’ needs are unique to their home so an assessment will need to be carried out by a registered OT (occupational therapist) who will make recommendations for changes that suit your requirements. The OT will complete a detailed report and present it in the correct format to the NDIS for review and subsequent approval.
Your OT will assist you with finding a reputable company to quote on and complete the modifications to a professional standard. This would involve the same process that you would go about to choose any trades company, you would look at their experience, reputation and specialty. Working with a reputable company to complete the work will be crucial to the success and functionality of the modifications.
